The In-situ Mechanical Testing of Nanoscale Single-crystalline Nanopillars

چکیده
Common materials like metals appear to have unique and interesting properties when reduced to nanoscale. One example is that they become signifi cantly stronger, exhibiting strengths an order of magnitude higher than bulk. Understanding material strength at the appropriate scale is crucial in the design and reliable functioning of devices comprised of these materials. This article reviews recent studies on the mechanical properties of cylindrical metallic nanopillars subjected to uniaxial deformation. Remarkable strengths and very different mechanical properties arise due to the activation of unique deformation mechanisms operating in these nanoscale volumes. Effects of both size and microstructure are discussed.

Microstructure versus size: mechanical properties of electroplated single crystalline Cu nanopillars.
We report results of uniaxial compression experiments on single-crystalline Cu nanopillars with nonzero initial dislocation densities produced without focused ion beam (FIB). Remarkably, we find the same power-law size-driven strengthening as FIB-fabricated face-centered cubic micropillars. TEM analysis reveals that initial dislocation density in our FIB-less pillars and those produced by FIB a...
متن کاملFabrication and microstructure control of nanoscale mechanical testing specimens via electron beam lithography and electroplating.
It has been demonstrated that the mechanical properties of materials change significantly when external dimensions are confined to the nanoscale. Currently, the dominant fabrication method for mechanical testing specimens with nanometer dimensions is by using focused ion beam (FIB) milling, which results in inevitable Ga(+) induced damage to the microstructure. Here, we report a FIB-less fabric...
متن کاملIn Situ Nanomechanical Testing of Crystalline Nanowires in Electron Microscopes
This article reviews in situ mechanical testing of crystalline nanowires in scanning and transmission electron microscopes, focusing on bottom–up synthesized, single-crystalline nanowires. Major experimental methods including resonance, bending, tension and buckling are summarized. In addition to commonly encountered experimental issues, deformation mechanisms learned from the in situ nanomecha...
متن کاملIn situ nanomechanical testing in focused ion beam and scanning electron microscopes.
The recent interest in size-dependent deformation of micro- and nanoscale materials has paralleled both technological miniaturization and advancements in imaging and small-scale mechanical testing methods. Here we describe a quantitative in situ nanomechanical testing approach adapted to a dual-beam focused ion beam and scanning electron microscope. A transducer based on a three-plate capacitor...
متن کاملEffects of Sample Geometry on the Uniaxial Tensile Stress State at the Nanoscale
Uniaxial compression of microand nanopillars is frequently used to elicit plastic size effects in single crystals. Uniaxial tensile experiments on nanoscale materials have the potential to enhance the understanding of the experimentally widely observed strength increase. Furthermore, these experiments allow for investigations into the in-strength and to help to study tension-compression asymmet...
